Intercultural Communication
The Intercultural Communication and Teamwork in Healthcare Seminar is offered as an elective each semester. The seminar curriculum has been further piloted and adapted for brief strategies sessions for staff, faculty, students and clinicians in the health sciences. Gail Coover (Center for Study of Cultural Diversity in Healthcare) and Mary Bumann (Area Health Education Center) have integrated social and behavioral sciences theory and research in communication with curriculum development and practice in health professions clinical teamwork. Participants in this curriculum engage in an experiential learning process that facilitates development of personal and group efficacy in intercultural communication and interprofessional teamwork. The course is provided to students, faculty, and staff from across the health sciences and related areas. It also includes community participants whose perspectives broaden discussion beyond the perspectives of the healthcare professional. Objectives include:
- Examining the influence of personal perspectives on intercultural interactions
- Enhancing ability to communicate authentically
- Developing responsive strategies for effective communication in interprofessional practice
- Developing strategies to repair relationships
- Developing strategies for self care
