Using the Tool for Assessing Cultural Competence Training (TACCT) with Our Clerkships: Curriculum Assessment and Development

During the Clerkship Directors Retreat in December 2006, the Tool for Assessing Cultural Competence Training (TACCT) was used to query clerkship directors on what areas they were teaching related to cultural issues and health disparities in the clinical years. They were also asked to identify at least one area they could add to their curriculum for the 2007-08 academic year. The tools used (TACCT for Clerkship Exercise FINAL Excel spreadsheet and TACCT PART 2.doc) were adapted from the AAMC TACCT instrument. Faculty and staff from each clinical rotation worked in groups to complete the assessment and discuss next steps. This total process took approximately 30 minutes. The results were collated (results/summary Excel spreadsheet), and distributed back to all involved in the process.

Roberta Rusch, MPH, IME Curriculum Manager for years 3 and 4, and Shobhina Chheda, MD, MPH, Director of Diversity Curriculum, followed up individually with the clerkship directors to assist them in achieving their goals of integrating the new TACCT components. Through these meetings, many of the clerkship directors identified exciting and creative opportunities for teaching the new content.

In Spring '07, third and fourth year students will also be asked to complete a survey regarding the clerkship they most recently completed that will hopefully provide comparative data with what the faculty have reported they are currently teaching. The combined faculty and student reports of what is being taught with respect to cultural issues and health care disparities should provide a clearer understanding of our curriculum content in this area and assist in further curriculum development.
