All Things Old are New Again
In July of 2006, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health hosted a 2½ day Innovations in Medical Education (IME) Transitional Clerkship for third-year medical students about to begin their clinical clerkships. Years ago, UWSMPH hosted a similar orientation for students, but recently it had been shortened to a one-day session.
The goals of this newly expanded workshop were to ease the transition into third-year clerkships and reduce student anxiety by orienting them to the unfamiliar culture, expectations, and procedures of the hospitals and clinics where they will be posted. A total of 144 rising third-year students attended the 2006 IME Transitional Clerkship July 5th-7th. Student evaluations were extremely positive immediately following the meeting, and at the six month post-Transitional Clerkship, allowing time for students to apply what they learned during Transitional Clerkship on their rotations. Clerkship Directors were also surveyed on how well they felt students had been prepared for their rotations. A synopsis of these surveys are captured in this report: Summary from 2006 Transitional Clerkship Evaluations
This year, the Transitional Clerkship will be held over two days and will include sessions on:
- Professionalism
- Skills Workshop
- Intro to Sterile Technique
- Communication
- Teamwork
- Prescription Writing
- What Do 4th Year Students Have to Say?
- Career Decision Making
